About the author:
Farid Chenoune (8 October 1949 – 8 November 2024) was a renowned French scholar, writer, and journalist specializing in the history and sociology of fashion. Initially a professor of French literature, he later transitioned to fashion journalism, contributing to publications such as Libération, Vogue, Mixt(e) (where he served as editor-in-chief), and Le Monde d'Hermès.

Chenoune lectured at prestigious institutions, including the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM), the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD), and the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He also collaborated with the University of the Arts London. He passed away in 2024 at the age of 75.

His influential work Des Modes et des Hommes (1993) was the first comprehensive history of men’s fashion in France, tracing its evolution from the French Revolution onward. The book, later translated as A History of Men’s Fashion, received critical acclaim for its groundbreaking insights. Chenoune also co-authored the catalog for the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective at the Petit Palais in 2010, which was awarded the Grand Prix du Livre de Mode.
